"Saint Maud" Review - From the Vaults

 "Saint Maud"

Maud (Morfydd Clark) is a quiet and exceedingly religious nurse, assigned to give palliative end of life care to an American dancer (Jennifer Ehle, I've not seen her in ages!) suffering from a cancer in the spine. As the two slowly come to bond and get to know each other, Maud realises that it is her mission to save this patient's wayward soul. But her own past, and all too sinister forces, stand in her way...

This is an A24 movie in all but name.

The first half is a raw kitchen sink drama, as the unpleasant realities of nursing are brought to the front, and Morfydd Clark is fucking incredible. Then the second half becomes an entirely different, unpleasant psychological horror story, as Maud may not be all that she seems.

This is fucking great.

Weird, but great.

It never outstays its welcome, Clark and Ehle are fantastic, and there are some genuinely unpleasant and spooky shots throughout.
