"Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter" (2014)
Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi) is a lonely Japanese woman, who discovers an old videotape of "Fargo" in a cave. Living with only her rabbit Bunzo for company, in a job she despises and becoming estranged from her mother; Kumiko is adrift in the world and becomes obsessed with finding the loot buried in that film.
Throwing caution to the wind, Kumiko takes the first opportunity she can to fly to America and find the treasure, unprepared for the cold, the language barrier and the culture clash of her journey...
This movie is simultaneously delightful and chilling: with a
whimsical tone undercut by an ever-growing dread; but anchored by an excellent Kikuchi as the determined and laser-focused Kumiko. It's about obsessions consuming us, even in our most miserable, darkest moments, and is done as a sort of subversion of the delightful "fish out of water road trip" movies we tend to get. A truly excellent score by "The Octopus Project" is the icing on the gorgeous cake.
