"Parallel Mothers"
Janis (Penelope Cruz) is a photographer in Milan, who is hoping to enlist the aid of the sexy, Spanish-version of
Hiroshi Abe, Arturo (Israel Elejalde) in digging up the mass grave her great-grandfather was buried in in her home village, so that her village may find peace. Meanwhile, she has become pregnant by the sexy Arturo...
In the hospital she meets teenage single mother-to-be Ana (Milena Smit), and they decide to keep in touch...
This is getting super-acclaim, and I sort of get it even if it's not my bag. Penelope Cruz is excellent, showing off a great range here, and the bright camp of the film works for the first hour or so, with lots of bright colours and 60s/70s kitschy decor; and soapy-esque twists and turns.
It attempts to go into darker territory, however, with its attempts to tackle the legacy of the past and war, and it seems like a whiplash.
Not my jam, but somebody will dig this to fuck.
