"Always Be My Maybe"
Sasha Tran (Ali Wong) and Marcus Kim (Randall Park) are next door neighbours and best friends in the early noughties. Sashas's parents are always away, so she spends time with Marcus and his folks. Marcus' mother dies, and the two sleep together in their shared grief, but split apart shortly after.
Fifteen years later: Sasha is a celebrity chef engaged to social media influencer Brandon (Daniel Dae Kim) and Marcus is the lead rapper in his local band, as well as working for his dad (James Saito). The two reconnect, and maybe find themselves growing ever closer...
This was a delightful rom-com. Wong and Park are amusing, and have a fantastic chemistry on screen. Their dialogue is witty, and the film goes into the lack of ambition on the part of Marcus and the stressful, constantly overachieving Sasha wonderfully; but doesn't patronise and actually does take a side.
It's good.
Then the surprise celebrity cameo comes, about 45 minutes in, and elevates this movie to God-tier. Were it anybody else in the part, it would be cringe-worthy; but because it is this actor, it works. I kind of don't want to spoil who it is, but you may already know. They are fantastic here, and having a whale of a time. They are also the most quotable part of the film, and the end credits song is about Marcus punching them, it's great.
