"Censor"
This poster just fucking rules |
Enid Barnes (Niamh Algar) works as a censor in the age of Video Nasties. She is utterly devoted to her job, and puritanical in her belief that she is helping people. But when she watches a film from the elusive "Frederick North", she becomes convinced that it is a snuff film, featuring her long missing sister, and starts an investigation of her own...
This movie's fucking great.
It's an incisive, perfect encapsulation of hysteria and the joys of video violence, and a tight little thriller. Michael Smiley (it's a British horror movie, of course he's in this) shows up for two scenes and is fucking chilling, getting some of the tensest moments on screen. It's a love letter to the period, with some shots straight out of "Evil Dead" and other gems (there is a fucking gorgeous night time shot at a caravan) all the way through as it (slickly edited too, fitting for its themes and plot) builds to a great climax.
Makes an excellent double bill with the underappreciated "Berberian Sound Studio", in more ways than one...
