"A Simple Wedding" Review - From the Vaults

 "A Simple Wedding"

Nousha Husseini (Tara Grammy) is struggling with relationships, especially since her ultra-orthodox parents (Shoreh Aghdashloo and Houshang Touzi) keep trying to set her up with other Iranian boys. She gives up hope, but finds an immediate and electrifying connection with Alex (Chris O'Shea), a white bisexual artist and DJ. Together they make for a lovely couple, but she has to contend with the inevitability of bringing him home to her parents...

First of all - our two leads are bloody brilliant together in this. Tara Grammy has a very Jenny Slate way she delivers and acts in this, and O'Shea is wonderfully charming. Their chemistry is electrifying, and the characters sweetly sketched out, we like both of them immensely and immediately.

Secondly: I love Shoreh Aghdashloo.

Rita Wilson produces this and co-stars as Alex's mother and, along with Maz Jobrani as Uncle Saman, gets the sweetest and most amusing sub plot of the movie.

This could so easily have fallen into racist "wacky" culture clash caricatures, but instead opts to be nuanced and funny and sweet, about culture and following one's heart.

Recommend immensely.
